Costume designers for “Promising Young Woman,” “Mulan” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” were among the winners at Tuesday evening’s virtual presentation of the 23rd Costume Designers Guild Awards.
“Promising Young Woman” designer Nancy Steiner won the award for excellence in contemporary films, beating out designers for “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Da 5 Bloods,” and “The Prom.”
Bina Daigeler won for sci-fi and fantasy films for her work on “Mulan.” The other nominees were the designers for “Dolittle,” “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey,” “Pinocchio” and “Wonder Woman 1984.”
Ann Roth was honored in the period film category for her designs for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” The rest of the field consisted of the designers for “Emma,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Mank” and “One Night in Miami.”
During the ceremony, television producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers jointly received the Distinguished Collaborator Award for their “unwavering support” of costume design and designers.
