Cinco de Mayo celebrations will be held Wednesday while law enforcement agencies will be cracking down on impaired driving.
Ballet Folklórico de Los Angeles will perform at the 2nd & PCH retail center in Long Beach at 5 p.m. followed at 6 p.m. with a concert by the Santa Ana-based mariachi band Mariachi Corazon de Maria.
Carson’s 46th annual Cinco de Mayo celebration will be a virtual fiesta beginning at 6:30 p.m. featuring musical performances, Aztec dancers and a trivia competition where gift cards will be awarded.
The celebration will be streamed on the city’s website, carsonca.gov/cinco, and shown in Carson on Channel 35 for Spectrum cable subscribers and Channel 99 for AT&T subscribers.
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of a 4,500-man Mexican militia over a larger, well-equipped French expeditionary force at the original Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
The Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will have additional officers and deputies on patrol looking for impaired drivers.
The LAPD will conduct additional patrols from 5 p.m.-1 a.m. in the Hollenbeck, Foothill, and Hollywood areas and from 6 p.m.-2 a.m. in the southeast area. The LAPD will conduct a traffic checkpoint at Manchester and Budlong avenues in South Los Angeles from 6 p.m.-11 p.m.
Both departments are encouraging anyone planning on drinking to get a sober ride home.
They are also reminding the public that in addition to alcohol, drugs may also impair, including marijuana, and to check medications and avoid driving after use if there is a “do not operate heavy machinery,” “may cause drowsiness” or other warning label.
