It took a superhero to do it, but “Barbie” is no longer the queen of the domestic box office, according to final figures released Monday.
“Blue Beetle” earned $25 million dollars in its opening weekend to claim the top spot at theaters, according to box office tracker Comscore. “Barbie” didn’t give up easily, finishing a close second with $21 million.
Director Greta Gerwig’s fantasy tale about the iconic Mattel doll has earned more than $566.8 million during its five weeks in theaters.
The historical drama “Oppenheimer” took third place over with weekend with $10.7 million, giving it a five-week haul of $285.4 million.
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” finished fourth with $8.5 million, followed by “Strays,” which opened with $8.2 million.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “Meg 2: The Trench” ($6.8 million); “Haunted Mansion” ($3.03 million); “Talk To Me” ($2.96 million); “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” ($2.7 million); and “Sound of Freedom” ($2.6 million).
