Three-time Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling will be honored with the 40th American Cinematheque Award in November.
“Ryan represents everything this honor stands for — an artist of extraordinary range, depth and fearless creative commitment,” American Cinematheque board chairman Rick Nicita said in a statement announcing the honor. “From his early work in `The Believer’ and `Half Nelson,’ for which he earned an Academy Award nomination, to his breathtaking performances in `Drive,’ `Blue Valentine,’ `La La Land,’ and his revelatory, scene-stealing turn in `Barbie,’ Ryan has demonstrated a remarkable ability to inhabit characters with intelligence, vulnerability, and undeniable charisma.
“Most recently, his stunning lead performance in `Project Hail Mary’ captivated audiences around the world, proving his extraordinary ability to carry a film with grace, wit, and profound emotional power,” he said. “The film’s remarkable global box office success and overwhelming critical acclaim stand as a testament to Ryan’s singular star power and artistic gifts. What distinguishes Ryan is not simply his talent, but his unwavering dedication to meaningful, adventurous filmmaking. He consistently chooses projects that challenge audiences and inspire his fellow artists.”
Gosling will receive the American Cinematheque Award during a gala event Nov. 2 at The Beverly Hilton. The event is the film-preservation organization’s annual fundraiser that benefits the group’s programming in Santa Monica, Hollywood and Los Feliz.
Gosling was twice nominated for Oscars for best actor, for his roles in “La La Land” and “Half Nelson.” He was nominated for best supporting actor for his role as Ken in “Barbie.”
His other film credits include “The Big Short,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” “The Notebook,” “Lars and the Real Girl” and “The Nice Guys.”
He is scheduled to appear next year in “Star Wars: Starfighter.”
Michael B. Jordan received the American Cinematheque Award last year. Other previous recipients include Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, Reese Witherspoon, Amy Adams, Matthew McConaughey, Julia Roberts, Samuel L. Jackson, Steve Martin, Al Pacino, George Clooney, Jodie Foster, Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg, Sean Connery, Eddie Murphy and Denzel Washington.
