Disney’s “Moana” opened with $43 million this weekend to lead all films in North American theaters, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
It was a disappointing total for the live-action remake of the studio’s 2016 animated hit, which opened to $56.6 million 10 years ago. The new film stars Dwayne Johnson and Catherine Laga’aia, in the title role.
Second place went to “Minions & Monsters,” which grossed $20.5 million Friday through Sunday, one week after opening in first place, Rentrak reported.
“Toy Story 5” made $18.5 million in its fourth weekend in theaters in the United States and Canada.
“Evil Dead Burn” opened with $13.7 million, followed by “Young Washington,” which grossed $6.4 million in its second weekend.
Rounding out the top 10 releases were “The Invite” ($5.7 million), “Obsession” ($3.8 million), “Supergirl” ($3.5 million), “Disclosure Day” ($3.2 million) and “Backrooms” ($1.4 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $125 million. The year-to-date total is $5.147 billion — up 10.6% from the figure at this time last year, according to Rentrak.
