The Los Angeles Police Department on Tuesday reminded owners of the iPhone 6 and other mobile devices to keep their phones safe and avoid thieves looking for an opportunity to capitalize on the hot new phones.

Police reached out to phone owners through social media and warned that the new smartphone is fast becoming a target of thieves. To reduce the risk of theft, LAPD offered the following tips:

  • Always be aware of your surroundings. Thieves may be watching.
  • Enable a security password on your phone.
  • Avoid becoming distracted by your phone while talking and texting on the street.
  • Keep the phone out of sight and do not hang it from a purse or jacket.
  • Switch off the ringer to avoid attracting the attention of thieves.
  • Consider using hands-free technology.
  • Never leave a phone unattended
  • Activate the “Find My iPhone” feature to help police recover the phone if stolen.

Police also encouraged iPhone 6 users to utilize a new “kill switch” feature that comes with the new phone. When enabled, the feature renders the phone useless to a thief and makes the phone unsellable.
