A ground-water reading done Thursday showed that San Gabriel Valley residents and businesses used 208 million less gallons of groundwater in the past week than was used during the same week in 2013, San Gabriel Valley Water Association officials said.

The announcement is part of an effort to raise public awareness of the need to protect groundwater basin storage through water conservation during California’s historic drought.

Now in its third week, the association’s 10-week public information features a weekly groundwater reading

A “Pass” grade is issued when water usage falls below that of the same time period last year. An “Alert” grade is issued when usage exceeds that of the same 2013 time period.

“San Gabriel Valley residents have done a tremendous job in conserving water, but the drought has presented new challenges and there is more we can do,” association President Dan Arrighi said. “Publishing the groundwater level on a weekly basis will help track our progress and help residents understand the importance of looking at drought solutions as a community effort.”

The San Gabriel Valley Water Association is composed of community water agencies, water suppliers and other water organizations in the valley.
