With Thanksgiving week approaching, only one overnight freeway closure was on the Caltrans schedule in L.A. County Saturday, and it will be a quick one.
The Golden State (5) Freeway will be closed from 2-4 a.m. Sunday in Burbank, as utility crews string new power lines over the freeway, the state agency said.
Both directions of the 5 Freeway will be closed from Buena Vista Street to Burbank Boulevard. Detours will be posted but will involve several turns and traffic signals.
The state has removed an antiquated San Fernando Road railroad underpass that dates back to the old U.S. 99, and is building a new Empire Avenue interchange there. The freeway is being widened and carpool lanes added, railroad tracks are to be relocated to a new overhead, and interchanges will be improved in the area.
The is one of 17 completed, under construction or imminent projects on Interstate 5 between Burbank and Frazier Park. The $3.2 billion effort will widen, repave and modernize the freeway, most of which is nearly 60 years old.
