High winds downed power lines in the Los Angeles area and in southern Orange County, impacting thousands of customers on Christmas, local utilities reported Thursday.
In Irvine, 5,593 Southern California Edison customers were without power as of 3 p.m.
At 8:30 a.m., the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power estimated about 7,200 customer accounts were without power.
The DWP computer showed customers were without power in various locations around Los Angeles, including Hollywood, Hyde Park, Tarzana, North Hills, Echo Park, Chinatown, Cheviot Hills, Century City, Beverlywood and Adams- Normandie.
Power was restored to all but 1,300 customers, mostly in the West Los Angeles area, by 2 p.m., according to the utility.
The outage continued to leave 3,512 Southern California Edison customers in the Los Angeles area in the dark as of 3 p.m. In Hawthorne, 927 were without power by the afternoon, while about 1,400 living in unincorporated areas were waiting for electricity to return.
