A geyser that erupted in the middle of a Griffith Park golf course Thursday was caused by a broken irrigation valve, according to the city’s Department of Recreation and Parks.

Workers at the Wilson Harding Golf Course were able to stop the geyser within about 15 minutes by shutting off the water at locations around the broken valve, Recreation and Parks spokeswoman Rose Watson said.

Only recycled water was released, Watson said.

She added the expected rainfall tonight will likely “buy us some time” to do the repairs to get the irrigation system running again in that area, which is near hole number 7.
