Nearly 1,000 children from nine Los Angeles schools will receive enough food to cover weekend meals thanks to a $50,000 donation from Morgan Stanley, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank announced Wednesday.

The bags will be distributed as part of the Food Bank’s BackPack Program and each bundle contains enough food for six meals, Food Bank spokeswoman Susan Acker said.

The bags, to be distributed each Friday of the school year, contain peanut butter, milk, cereal, bread, canned goods and other staples.

Morgan Stanley’s donation will cover weekend meals for 875 students at eight elementary schools, and 88 students at an expansion school site.

The investment management company has donated a total of $260,000 to the food bank since 2009. The latest grant is part of a $14 million pledge made to Feeding America, which works with 200 local food banks.

A study commissioned by Feeding America in 2014 found that 89 percent of their client families had one child who did not have steady access to affordable and nutritious food.
