South Gate police reminded residents that although they are allowed to purchase safe and sane fireworks, they must be legal.
Such fireworks must be purchased from regulated state and city licensed fireworks booths.
The maximum penalty for possessing illegal fireworks is a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Police ask that anyone knowing of people possessing illegal fireworks to call the South Gate Police Department at (323) 563-5400.
