Fireworks displays will be lighting up skies across the Southland this weekend, and with fire officials warning people to avoid using pyrotechnics of their own, residents will have an array of choices of professional shows to attend.

Sky shows also typically generate the busiest day of the year for animal control officers, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control.

Dogs and cats can be startled and disoriented by the sound of fireworks, while owners out celebrating don’t realize extra precautions are necessary.

Fireworks shows will be held in Los Angeles County beginning Thursday night, with shows planned at Hawaiian Gardens Elementary School and at the “Cars & Stripes Forever” event at the Port of Los Angeles. The Hollywood Bowl will also have the first of three consecutive nights of fireworks shows Thursday night, featuring headliner Smokey Robinson.

Streets will be closed Saturday in Redondo Beach as the city hosts the July 4th Village Runner 5K. Police warned that a number of streets will be closed between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The closed streets include the 1800 block of South Elena Avenue, the 300, 1700 and 1800 block of South Catalina Avenue, the 100 block of Avenue I and the 100 through the 1600 blocks of Esplanade, according to the Redondo Beach police.

Caltrans will shut down Rosemead Boulevard between Marshall Street and Mission Drive in Rosemead from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday for Rosemead’s July 4th, 5 K and Kids Mile Tot Trot.
