A motorist who was killed, along with her passenger, when her car slammed into a concrete pole in a Ralphs supermarket parking garage was identified Friday as an 87-year-old Glendale resident, and police were working to determine what caused the crash.

Both women in the car died at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 1:15 p.m. Thursday near the street-level entrance of the underground parking garage in the 600 block of East Wilson Avenue, Glendale city spokesman Tom Lorenz said.

The driver was identified as Ana Cabot, 87, said coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

The name of the other woman, who also was 87 and a resident of Glendale, was withheld, pending family notification, said Glendale police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot.

Cabot apparently lost control of the vehicle and struck the pillar at a high rate of speed, Lorenz said. Police said the Mercedes-Benz sedan also struck two parked cars.

Police said the motorist drove into the south entrance of the garage off Wilson Avenue and raced through the garage for unknown reasons.

Lightfoot said investigators are checking the vehicle for a possible mechanical malfunction, but warned, “That’s going to take some time.”

Police have also obtained surveillance video from the parking garage, according to Lightfoot, who said coroner’s investigators will try to determine if Cabot suffered from a medical condition that may have contributed to the crash.
