A small plane towing a banner made a safe emergency landing Friday in the Los Angeles River bed in Vernon, authorities said.

It’s unclear what prompted the emergency landing of the Piper PA-25 Pawnee about 1:10 p.m. in the vicinity of Atlantic and Bandini boulevards, said Ian Gregor of the Federal Aviation Administration.

The pilot, the plane’s sole occupant, was unharmed and the aircraft was not damaged, Gregor said.

The plane’s registered owner is Florida-based Aerial Banners Inc., according to the FAA’s online aircraft registry.
