With temperatures expected to soar for much of the week, the city of Long Beach announced Tuesday it will offer extended hours at six cooling centers to provide relief for people without air conditioning.

According to city health officer Dr. Mitchell Kushner, the extended hours will be offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The following centers will be open until 8 p.m. each night:

— Houghton Park, 6301 Myrtle Ave.;

— Silverado Community Center, 1545 W. 31st St.;

— El Dorado West Community Center, 2800 Studebaker Road;

— Jenny Oropeza Community Center, 401 Golden Ave.;

— McBride Community Center, 1550 Martin Luther King Ave.; and

— Long Beach Senior Center, 1150 E. Fourth St.

City officials noted that many stores, malls, theaters and libraries also offer air conditioning and relief from the heat.
