The city of Long Beach Thursday reopened to swimmers the final section of beach affected by a Sept. 15 sewage spill in San Gabriel that fouled coastal waters.

The beach west of Fifth Place was the last that was off-limits to swimmers following the spill.

“Lab results received Wednesday afternoon indicated bacterial levels in this area are within state standards,” according to the city.

At least 250,000 gallons of sewage spilled on Sept. 15 during a rainstorm that washed away a temporary wall at a San Gabriel construction site, rupturing the sewage line. The sewage dumped into a wash that leads to the ocean.
