A Long Beach Fire Department captain who died suddenly earlier this week was being mourned Friday.
Captain Ryan Thornton died Wednesday, aged 46, Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jake Heflin said without reporting the cause of death.
Thornton was an 18-year veteran of the department who was promoted to fire captain in June 2010, Heflin said. At the time of his death, he oversaw hazardous materials operations.
Heflin said a memorial service is scheduled Oct. 14 for Thornton, who is survived by his parents, three brothers and two children.
