Don’t want to get stuck in the Black Friday mess? A San Francisco nonprofit dedicated to saving redwood trees doesn’t want you to, either.

NBC of the Bay Area reports Save the Redwoods will provide Southland residents – and anyone else – free admission to 49 participating California redwood state parks on this year’s Black Friday, Nov. 27. The group says the unprecedented event as “the best bargain you’re going to find this Black Friday.”

Inspired by REI, an outdoors store that went viral with its announcement it will not be opened on the shopping holiday, the league hopes to start a new tradition and get Californians outside.

How do you do it? Just download a pass before going to a participating state park.

While origins of the term “Black Friday” – the giant shopping day on the Friday after Thanksgiving – are somewhat murky, it’s often believed it refers to retailers finally being able to erase the year’s losses and be “in the black” due to the massive turnout of shoppers.
