A 27,000-gallon sewage spill Friday has caused a beach closure for all swimming areas in Alamitos Bay, city officials said.

The spill stopped at about 2:45 p.m., but Long Beach Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis ordered the closure of swimming areas at Marine Stadium, Mother’s Beach, Colorado Lagoon and Bayshore until lab results from the city health department confirm that the water is safe.

Officials note that after any significant rainfall, unhealthy conditions might result from increased runoff from storm drains and rivers. They caution that recreational swimming areas should be avoided for three days following any significant storm.

Long Beach residents can call (562) 570-4199 for the latest status on beach water quality.
