The design for a new 111-foot-high mural to be painted on an exterior wall of San Pedro’s the historic Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro will be unveiled Friday.
The theatre was built in 1931 and has been operated by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs since 1996.
“This new mural at the Warner Grand Theatre is yet another example of San Pedro’s thriving arts scene,” Councilman Joe Buscaino said. “Bringing a mural of this scale to San Pedro is a unique opportunity to create a new visual landmark.”
The mural will be painted over the summer on the east wall of the theater by artist Kent Yoshimura.
“Growing up, art represented much more than simply aesthetics,” said Yoshimura, who grew up in San Pedro. “To me, it was a platform where I could express myself both emotionally and publicly, and to be able to paint it on a theater that I have so many nostalgic ties to, and insight conversation, is really a dream come true.”
Buscaino will take part in a ceremony to unveil the design for the mural at 6 p.m.
