A man threatened to jump Thursday from an overpass connecting the Santa Ana (5) and Orange (57) freeways, tying up afternoon rush hour traffic before he was safely taken into custody.

Authorities were alerted at 3:17 p.m. that the unidentified man was threatening to jump from the Bristol Street-La Veta Avenue overpass, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Agustin Latosquin. He later surrendered to authorities, who took him to an area hospital to be evaluated.

Authorities shut down the northbound lanes of the 57 to the 5, and the eastbound Garden Grove (22) Freeway lanes to the northbound 57, Latosquin said, until the man was brought to safety.

The westbound lanes of the 22 to the northbound 57 connector were also closed during that period.
