Caltrans plans to close all lanes on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway Sunday evening, starting at the big interchange in the Newhall Pass, the agency said Sunday.
Traffic on the northbound 5 Freeway will be diverted to the northbound Antelope Valley (14) Freeway.
Lane closures will start at 9 p.m. Sunday evening, with two northbound lanes blocked off. By 1 a.m. Monday, the entire northbound freeway will be closed, with traffic diverted to the 14 from the carpool, mainline and truck lanes.
The north 5 lanes will be reopened starting at 4 a.m. Monday, but one or two lanes may be closed as late at 6 a.m., the agency warned.
The northbound freeway closure will be in effect for nine miles, past Calgrove Boulevard to Lyons Avenue/Pico Canyon Road interchange.
Although other detours from the 14 Freeway to the northbound 5 are possible, Caltrans recommends that motorists stay on the 14 to Golden Valley Road, and turn north there. Golden Valley Road eventually bends west and becomes Newhall Valley Road, where motorists can rejoin the 5 Freeway at the Route 126 interchange.
