Mountain High Ski Area
Snow prompted lots of visitors to local mountains, and many traffic jams getting to the white stuff.

The first good dump of snow of the year caused traffic chaos in the upper elevations of Los Angeles County’s mountains Sunday.

And snow was reportedly sticking to the pavement on Interstate 5 over the Grapevine at dawn Sunday morning, but flurries tapered off and the eight-lane freeway over the mountains remained open.

Traditional snow play areas west of Frazier Peak were too low to get any snowfall from the latest storm, so no traffic jams developed there.

But CHP officers were directing traffic at the high-altitude Mountain High Ski Area, near Wrightwood, where large numbers of skiers and snow play enthusiasts were jamming roads and parking areas Sunday.

State Highway 2 was open from the high desert to the ski area with no chain requirements. But the Big Pines Highway between Palmdale and Wrightwood had chain requirements.

And Highway 2 remained closed between Islip Saddle and Big Pines Highway, as snow is not removed from that road all winter.
