A 64-year-old Diamond Bar man was killed when the vehicle he was driving went off the road and then down a steep embankment in the Mt. Wilson area near Altadena, authorities said Wednesday.

The crash was reported at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday on Mt. Wilson Red Box Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Ford the man was driving was southbound on Mt. Wilson Red Box Road when, for unknown reasons, it veered to the right and traveled onto a raised curb and into a metal guardrail, then down a steep embankment, slamming into several large trees, according to the CHP.

The vehicle eventually came to a rest on its right side against a large tree. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.
