The city Airport Commission approved a $209 million contract Wednesday for Swinerton Builders to design and construct a parking office facility that is part of the airport’s Landside Access Modernization Program.
The Intermodal Transportation Facility-West, located between Westchester Parkway and 96th Street, is a planned five-level parking structure containing approximately 4,700 parking spaces, a dedicated concessions area and the LAX security and badging office. It will also include a pick-up and drop-off curb for both commercial and private vehicles and will be served by new roadways providing direct access to the facility.
The $5.5 billion Landside Access Modernization Program will also include a Consolidated Rent-A-Car Center that aims to bring together more than 20 car rental offices and feature a 2.25-mile Automated People Mover to eliminate the need for rental car courtesy vehicles to enter the central terminal area and reduce the number of autos driving in and out of the airport by an estimated 3,200 each day.
“Today’s approval to build the ITF-West represents another milestone in developing a more reliable and convenient way for travelers to access the terminals,” said Sean Burton, president of the Board of Airport . “Earlier this year, we awarded the contract to build an Automated People Mover and later this year we plan to award the Consolidated Rent-a-Car facility contract. Together, these projects will provide much needed parking and traffic relief for our passengers and the community.”
The ITF-West station, located adjacent to the parking structure, will eventually provide a direct connection with the terminals via the people mover system. The ITF-West is scheduled to be operational in 2021, and a shuttle will temporarily transport guests to and from the ITF-West until the people mover is operational in 2023.
“We are continuously working to improve the guest experience at LAX,” said Deborah Flint, CEO of LAWA. “This new facility will allow for travelers to park and ride to the terminals without coming into the terminal loop.”
