A home in South Pasadena was in danger of collapsing Wednesday after a water line ruptured underneath it, causing the ground and its driveway to sink, authorities said.
“The driveway was creaking and groaning and coming down,” homeowner Bob Lynes told NBC4. “It was just collapsing.”
South Pasadena Fire Department crews were sent to the home in the 1800 block of Hanscom Drive around 8 p.m. Tuesday and were concerned about what might happen next.
“What’s going to happen through the night, what’s going to happen tomorrow, is the house going to slide a little bit, is there going to be anymore structural collapse of the driveway system,” Battalion Chief Chris Szenczi told NBC4 Tuesday evening. “We did have (Urban Search and Rescue) that evaluated and it just wasn’t safe to get underneath that and try and shore it up.”
The couple evacuated from the affected home said they have a safe place to stay. A total of five homes in the neighborhood were evacuated as a precaution, NBC4 reported.
No injuries were reported.
