“Sonic The Hedgehog,” a family film based on the popular video game and starring Jim Carrey as the villain, had a spectacular opening at the box office, leading all films with $70 million over the four-day holiday weekend, according to revised industry estimates out Monday.
“Birds of Prey,” last week’s top-grossing film, is in second place, grossing an estimated $19.8 million Friday through Monday at theaters in the United States and Canada, Comscore reported.
“Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island” opened with $14 million for third place, followed by “The Photograph” with $13.2 million and “Bad Boys for Life” with $13 million.
Rounding out the 10 top-grossing films of the weekend are “1917” ($9.4 million), “Parasite” ($6.8 million), “Jumanji: The Next Level” ($6.7 million), “Dolittle” ($5.9 million) and “Downhill” ($5.1 million).
