All westbound lanes of the Santa Monica (10) Freeway were shut down at Fourth Street in Santa Monica Monday morning to keep traffic away from a fire hydrant sheared by a car on nearby Pacific Coast Highway (1), authorities said.
The gray Mazda 3 hit the hydrant at about 11:20 p.m. Sunday at Pacific Coast Highway and Fourth Street, according to the California Highway Patrol. It did not appear the driver was injured, the CHP said.
A SigAlert was issued at 2:43 a.m. shutting down the lanes where they become Highway One while the hydrant was repaired.
