Evacuations were ordered Tuesday evening for residents in a South Los Angeles neighborhood as a 300-foot-by-500-foot pallet yard went up in flames.

Firefighters responded to the 1700 block of East 57th Street, between Alameda Street and Long Beach Boulevard, at 10:55 p.m. and discovered heavy fire coming from the pallet yard and an unknown number of homes nearby exposed to the flames, prompting the evacuation order, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Los Angeles County firefighters were assisting LAFD crews in battling the flames, Stewart said.

Video from the scene showed much of the yard engulfed in flames and a nearby power pole burning.
