A man in his 40s who threatened to jump from an overpass prompted the 8 1/2-hour closure Friday morning of a stretch of the southbound Long Beach (710) Freeway in Pasadena before he was persuaded to give up.
The man gave up just after 8 a.m., according to Pasadena Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian. “Just ended. Transported for psych eval,” she said. All lanes were reopened just before 8:30 a.m.
The man was spotted on the Green Street bridge, between St. John Avenue and the freeway, just after midnight, Derderian said.
Video from the scene showed at least one fire truck with its ladder extended up to the bridge and an air mattress set up below the bridge.
All southbound lanes of the Long Beach Freeway south of the Foothill (210) Freeway and the transition roads from the east- and westbound Foothill and westbound Ventura (134) freeways to the southbound Long Beach Freeway were closed until the situation ended, the California Highway Patrol said.
