A motorcyclist died when he rear-ended a Tesla on the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway in Irwindale, the California Highway Patrol said Saturday.

The crash, west of Irwindale Avenue, occurred at about 2:40 p.m. Friday, the CHP reported.

Matthew Hathaway, a 30 year-old resident of La Verne, was eastbound on a 2019 Suzuki GSXR 750 on the 210 Freeway approaching the Tesla Model Y vehicle, whose driver had slowed to a near stop due to traffic ahead.

The motorcyclist, whom officials said was driving at an unsafe speed, rear-ended the Tesla and was ejected from his bike in a southerly direction, landing in the No. 3 lane, where he was struck by the left rear tire of an approaching big rig.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:54 p.m. It was unknown if drugs and/or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The CHP’s Baldwin Park office urged anyone who saw the crash to call them at 626-338-1164.
