A 45-year-old man who was fatally shot in Compton Saturday may have been an innocent bystander.

The shooting was reported at 10:05 a.m. in the 200 block of North Bowen Avenue, according to Deputy Alejandra Parra of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The mortally wounded man was found in a driveway and taken by paramedics to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 2:25 p.m., Parra said.

“Investigators learned a shooting had occurred approximately (half a block) north of where the victim had been standing with friends,” said sheriff’s Deputy Shawn Du Busky. “Unknown persons in a compact car exchanged gunfire with an unknown individual on foot near the intersection of North Bowen Avenue and East Palmer Street. Both fled the area after the shooting. It appears the victim was an innocent bystander struck by a stray bullet.”

Homicide detectives conducted an investigation at the crime scene but did not provide descriptions of the suspects or the weapon used, which was not found, Du Busky said.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call homicide detectives at 323-890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
