Many Torrance residents likely heard a strange siren Thursday morning as the city tested its newly installed outdoor emergency alert notification system.

The city tested the Torrance Neighborhood Outdoor Warning Sirens, or TorranceNOW, at 10 a.m.

The warning system includes a siren, chimes and even voice announcements designed to alert the public in the event of a major emergency.

TorranceNOW sirens are located at all six city fire stations, the Southeast Library at 23115 Arlington Ave. and at the corner of Lomita Boulevard and Madison Street.
