A man shot to death outside a Long Beach home was publicly identified Saturday.

Rudolph Anthony Lopez died from a gunshot wound of the head after he was shot in the driveway of a home at about 5:15 a.m. Thursday in the 2000 block of Harding Street, near Cherry Avenue, the Medical Examiner’s office said. Lopez’s age was not available.

“Upon arrival, officers contacted a male adult victim with a gunshot wound to the upper body,” according to a Long Beach Police Department statement. “Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and determined the victim deceased.”

Homicide detectives responded and, while investigating, officers were called to the area of 49th Street and Del Amo Boulevard regarding a person having a mental health crisis, police said.

They encountered a man later identified as 24-year-old Garrett Remillard of Long Beach, who made statements connecting himself to the killing, according to the LBPD.

“Through the investigation, detectives were able to determine Remillard as the suspect responsible for the shooting,” according to police.

Remillard was arrested and booked into the Long Beach Jail, where he was booked on suspicion of murder with bail set at $2 million.

Investigators said Remillard and the victim now identified as Lopez knew one another, but they were working to learn the motive for the attack.

Anyone with information about the case was urged to call Long Beach police detectives Ethan Shear and Kelsey Myers at 562-570-7244.
