A brush fire broke out Thursday in Val Verde, burning about 36 acres as Los Angeles County firefighters worked to contain the flames.

Initial estimates had placed the fire at up to 100 acres, but that number was revised later in the afternoon.

Crews responded around 1:40 p.m. to the 28100 block of Chiquito Canyon Road, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The fire was elevated to a second alarm, but no structures were reported threatened, fire officials said.

As of 4:20 p.m., the burned area was estimated at 36 acres, according to county fire officials.
