Two people who were found dead at a homeless encampment in the Westlake District in May, including a woman whose body had been partially mauled by dogs, died from the effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine, the county Office of Medical Examiner announced Wednesday.
According to the medical examiner, the bodies of Lucrecia Macias Barajas, 46, and Fredy Pojoy Sajqui, 39, were both found inside a tent at the encampment near Miramar Street and Beaudry Avenue on May 12.
Reports from the scene that day indicated that Barajas was found inside the locked tent — with her body partially mauled by dogs — and the other victim was found nearby.
The medical examiner confirmed “evidence of animal activity” on the body of Barajas, but concluded that it occurred after she had died.
Both deaths were ruled accidental.
Barajas was an Army veteran and mother of six.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement when the bodies were found, saying, “This case reinforces our urgent need to address this grave humanitarian crisis. We will continue collaborating with the council office to bring more Angelenos inside and do all that we can to improve public safety,”
