A 55-hour extended weekend lane reduction for paving work begins Friday evening on the southbound San Gabriel River (605) Freeway in Whittier.

There will be no full freeway closures associated with the work, which will require lane reductions between Washington Boulevard and Slauson Avenue, according to Caltrans.

The closures begin Friday and will extend through Monday morning.

The southbound 605 will be reduced to one lane from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday; just two southbound lanes will be open from 4 a.m. Saturday to 11 p.m. Sunday. Only one lane will be open from 11 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday.

All southbound 605 lanes will reopen to the public by 5 a.m. Monday.

The following are ramp closures:

– the westbound Washington Boulevard on-ramp to the southbound 605 will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday;

– the eastbound Washington Boulevard on-ramp to the southbound 605 will be closed from 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday;

– the eastbound Slauson Avenue on-ramp to the southbound 605 will be closed from 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday;

– the southbound 605 off-ramp to westbound Slauson Avenue will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

More 55-hour extended weekend lane reductions are scheduled through the rest of 2026.

The work includes demolition of old freeway lane concrete, which may cause residents and businesses in the area to experience noise, vibrations and dust.

“Demolition of old freeway lane concrete occurs on Friday nights,” authorities said in a statement.

The work is part of the $260 million Super 605 Freeway Enhancements Project to rehabilitate the freeway from Long Beach to the San Gabriel Valley.
