Actress Glenn Close will be honored Friday with a hand and footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival.
The ceremony was set for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the theater, where generations of film legends have left their handprints and footprints in cement as part of a long-standing Hollywood tradition.
Close, an eight-time Academy Award nominee, is also scheduled to present a screening of the 1988 film “Dangerous Liaisons” during the festival, for which she received one of her Oscar nominations.
Festival organizers said the ceremony recognizes performers who have made a lasting impact on the motion picture industry and will place Close among a select group of honorees memorialized at the historic venue.
“I’ll never forget seeing her in `The Big Chill,’ delivering a memorably layered performance that revealed the extraordinary talent, intelligence and emotional depth that have defined her career ever since,” Ben Mankiewicz, host of the TCM Classic Film Festival, said in a statement. “More than four decades later, Glenn Close continues to captivate audiences — from her earliest roles to iconic performances like `Dangerous Liaisons’ — and we are proud to honor her enduring legacy at this year’s festival.”
Close first gained widespread recognition with her film debut in “The World According to Garp,” earning an Academy Award nomination, and followed with acclaimed performances in “The Big Chill” and “The Natural.”
She later became known for her role in the 1987 thriller “Fatal Attraction,” and continued to earn critical acclaim with performances in “Dangerous Liaisons,” “Reversal of Fortune,” “Albert Nobbs” and “The Wife.”
In addition to her film work, Close has received multiple Emmy, Golden Globe and Tony awards, reflecting a career that has spanned film, television and stage.
Born March 19, 1947, in Greenwich, Connecticut, Close grew up in a family with deep roots in the area before spending part of her teenage years abroad after her father relocated to Africa to open a medical clinic.
She later returned to the United States and attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, where she studied drama before launching her professional acting career.
Close began her career on the stage, making her Broadway debut in the 1970s and earning early recognition that led to film roles.
She will join a list of previous hand and footprint ceremony honorees at the TCM Classic Film Festival that includes Michelle Pfeiffer, Jodie Foster, Lily Tomlin, Billy Crystal, Cicely Tyson and Jane Fonda.
The TCM Classic Film Festival runs through May 3 in Hollywood, featuring screenings, special events and appearances by actors and filmmakers.
