Torrance will continue its decades-long Armed Forces Day tradition Saturday with a parade and community celebration honoring the nation’s military, despite reduced participation by because of the ongoing conflict in Iran.

The annual celebration, which began Friday and continues through Sunday, includes an Armed Forces Day Parade scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday along Torrance Boulevard between Crenshaw Boulevard and Madrona Avenue.

A Stars and Strides 5K run is set for 8 a.m. Saturday near the Torrance Sports Complex on Maple Avenue and Civic Center Drive.

City officials said the U.S. Department of Defense directed military branches to limit participation in public events because resources and personnel are being prioritized for active operations related to the conflict in Iran.

“Although we are navigating unforeseen circumstances, and global events are placing new demands on our military, Torrance remains steadfast in our commitment to honor the men and women who serve our country,” Torrance Mayor George K. Chen said in a statement.

This year’s parade grand marshal is Brig. Gen. Omar J. Randall, commanding general of the 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force.

Retired Marine Gunnery Sgt. Ernest “Gunny” Napper will serve as honorary grand marshal.

The celebration also includes military and community exhibits at the Torrance City Yard, food trucks, a children’s activity zone and military recruitment displays.

“Our department takes great pride in ensuring it is carried out safely and successfully,” said Lt. Charles Fisher of the Torrance Police Department’s Traffic Division. “Despite the limitations this year, we are working in close coordination with our partners to ensure a safe, organized, and meaningful experience where the community can come together to honor our Armed Forces.”

According to the city, the Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade is the nation’s longest-running military parade and one of the few events officially designated by the Department of Defense as an Armed Forces Day celebration.
