The Los Angeles County Museum of Art will host a free campus-wide Block Party Saturday as part of its grand opening celebration for the museum’s David Geffen Galleries.
The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, will feature free admission throughout the museum, art activities, live music, food offerings and the Los Angeles debut of “The Art Parade,” a public procession expected to draw more than 1,000 artists to Wilshire Boulevard, according to museum officials.
The festivities are part of LACMA’s grand opening weekend celebration for the David Geffen Galleries, the museum’s new home for its permanent collection, which opened to the public in May.
The building, designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor, spans Wilshire Boulevard and serves as the centerpiece of LACMA’s campus transformation. The elevated glass-and-concrete structure houses approximately 110,000 square feet of gallery space displaying works from the museum’s collection of more than 155,000 objects spanning thousands of years of history.
Museum officials said Saturday’s Block Party is intended to welcome the broader Los Angeles community to the new galleries.
To accommodate the festivities, Wilshire Boulevard between Curson and Fairfax avenues will be closed from 6 a.m. until midnight, officials said.
The Block Party is one of several public events planned during the museum’s grand opening weekend celebration, which runs through Monday.
On Sunday, LACMA will host a soccer-juggling workshop connected to its “Fútbol Is Life” exhibition, along with a public watch party for the World Cup match between Uruguay and Cape Verde. Also Sunday, L.A. Dance Project will present a performance at the David Geffen Galleries.
LACMA CEO and Director Michael Govan is scheduled to join Studio Museum in Harlem director and chief curator Thelma Golden for a public discussion Sunday afternoon. Later that evening, the museum will host the “SPIRITS Summer Solstice Dance,” featuring music and digital art performances.
On Monday, visitors will be able to take part in a sound bath experience presented within LACMA’s “Realms of the Dharma” exhibition as the museum concludes its grand opening weekend celebration.
