The California Community Foundation Monday activated its CCF Impact Fund to provide direct relief to East Los Angeles residents affected by the cold-storage warehouse fire in Boyle Heights.
The organization urged Angelenos and anyone who is interested to donate to the CCF Fund at calfund.org, with residents impacted by the fire expected to receive direct-cash aid, food distribution, air purifiers, and other emergency essentials.
Families in Boyle Heights and in surrounding neighborhoods have spent days sheltering indoors, missing work, or caring for loved with smoke-related health concerns as a result of the nearly week-old fire. Financial assistance will help meet those urgent and everyday needs, according to the foundation.
“Boyle Heights families should not have to face this emergency alone,” Miguel Santana, president and CEO of the California Community Foundation, said in a statement.
“The organizations best positioned to reach residents quickly, and with dignity, are the neighborhood partners already working in this community every day. The CCF Impact Fund allows us to get resources where they’re needed most, through partners families already know and trust,” Santana added.
The Lineage warehouse, located at 1400 S. Los Palos St., erupted in fire about 2:30 p.m. last Wednesday. While crews initially believed they had contained the blaze, pockets of fire have continued to burn inside the building.
A special Particle Pollution Advisory issued by the AQMD was extended until at least 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
County health officials on Monday urged residents impacted by the smoke to take precautions, such as staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, limiting activities outdoors and wearing a high-quality face mask while outside.
The city and county of Los Angeles issued a joint declaration of emergency over the weekend, which was followed by a similar declaration made by Gov. Gavin Newsom. The declarations serve to mobilize resources at the state level to assist the fire fight, as well as post-recovery efforts.
