Animal rights activists plan to protest Monday outside Pico Rivera city hall to oppose what they are calling new attempts to reopen “Los Angeles County’s last cow slaughterhouse.”
The protest is against the owner of Manning Beef, which closed in 2025, but “is now the subject of a controversial reopening attempt.”
“Despite allegedly owing more than $25 million to creditors, the owner is apparently seeking to resurrect operations under a new name: `Palermo Meats,’ according to protest organizers who are calling for the city’s planning commission to permanently revoke permission for the slaughterhouse operation.
“We have faith that with enough support from the public that the city of Pico Rivera will be able to move on with plans that will not involve continuing to slaughter animals at this location, ” says Ellen Dent, Executive Director of Animal Alliance Network Ellen Dent said in an announcement of the protest. “We hope that instead this location will be transformed into a space for the community to thrive in.”
A planning commission hearing on the matter will follow the protest.
