“Minions & Monsters” opened with $36.4 million this weekend to lead all films in North American theaters, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The seventh film in the animated franchise from Illumination and Universal Pictures — which began with 2010’s “Despicable Me” — beat out another animated franchise installment, Pixar’s “Toy Story 5,” which brought in $31 million in its third week in theaters.
Patriotic moviegoers flocked to see “Young Washington” over the July 4 weekend, helping the biopic starring William Franklyn-Miller to a third-place opening with $20.8 million, Rentrak reported.
“Supergirl” was fourth with $9.6 million Friday through Sunday in its second weekend, followed by “Disclosure Day,” which made $6 million in its fourth week.
“Obsession” continued its phenomenal run with $5.3 million in its eighth weekend in theaters.
Another low-budget horror film from a young director, Kane Parsons’ “Backrooms,” made $3.3 million in its sixth weekend.
Rounding out the top 10 releases were “Jackass: Best and Last” ($2.7 million), “Scary Movie” ($1.1 million) and “The Invite” ($800,708).
