“The Odyssey” opened with $124.5 million this weekend to lead all films in North American theaters, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
Director Christopher Nolan’s epic adaptation of Homer’s classic Greek tale stars Matt Damon and a cast of other big names including Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, John Leguizamo and Travis Scott.
It is the first film to be shot entirely in 70mm IMAX, making some of its screenings more expensive than the typical movie.
Disney’s “Moana” made $19 million Friday through Sunday, one weekend after opening in first place with about $43 million in theaters in the United States and Canada.
“Toy Story 5” and “Minions & Monsters” tied for third place with $14.8 million each, Rentrak reported. “Toy Story 5” is in its fifth week in theaters, and “Minions & Monsters” is in its third week.
“Evil Dead Burn” made $5 million in its second week.
Rounding out the top 10 releases were “The Invite” ($3.9 million), “Young Washington” ($3.6 million), “Obsession” ($2.5 million), “Supergirl” ($1.5 million) and “Disclosure Day” ($1.4 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $193.5 million. The year-to-date total is $5.414 billion — up 10.4% from the figure at this time last year, according to Rentrak.
