A broken water main opened a hole in the pavement Tuesday in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles.

The break occurred about 2:40 a.m. in an 8-inch line near the intersection of First Street and Detroit Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

Water could be seen gurgling up from a hole in the pavement and flowing down the street.

Crews shut down the flow of water and set about fixing the line, with an estimated time of repair of 4 p.m., a department spokeswoman said.

Only one customer’s service was interrupted, she said.

In the meantime, First Street was closed between Detroit and La Brea Avenue and motorists were advised to seek alternate routes.

The break comes in the wake of a reopened Sunset Boulevard following more than a week of work repairing a July 16 water main break in a 36-inch line near the intersection of Sunset and Holloway Drive in West Hollywood.
