The Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ annual Mass in recognition of all immigrants will be celebrated Sunday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles, where ribbons bearing the names of people affected by immigration will be presented.
Archbishop José H. Gomez will celebrate the Mass at 3:30 p.m. at the cathedral, 555 W. Temple St., according to the archdiocese.
The ribbons are part of a special “Ribbons of Prayer” chapel established at the cathedral to commemorate the International Day of Migrants and Refugees.
Visitors are invited to write the name of a person affected by immigration on a ribbon and tie it to a stand in the center of the chapel. The collected ribbons will be presented during Sunday’s Mass.
Parishes throughout the archdiocese have also been invited to bring handwritten ribbons and prayer petitions from people unable to attend the Mass.
The chapel features works by local sacred artist Lalo Garcia, including his painting “El Viaje del Migrante,” or “The Migrant’s Journey.”
The “Ribbons of Prayer” program will continue through mid-October. People unable to participate in person can submit a name online at lacatholics.org/ribbons-of-prayer to be added to the display.
The annual Mass in Recognition of all Immigrants has been held since 2013, bringing together Catholics from across Southern California in prayer and recognition of immigrants and their families, according to the archdiocese.
