Sugar, the white peacock allegedly struck by a U.S. Postal Service worker in Pasadena, has been relocated to a private ranch in Northern California after recovering from his injuries, Pasadena Humane announced Wednesday.
Surveillance video last month appeared to show the postal worker striking the peacock on Mohawk Street in Pasadena. The U.S. Postal Service said at the time that it was investigating the incident.
The bird was moved from Pasadena Tuesday after several weeks of care.
“After nursing him back to health, our veterinarians and wildlife experts determined that relocation offered Sugar the best quality of life and would reduce the risk of future negative encounters given the significant public attention surrounding his case,” Pasadena Humane said.
“Pasadena Humane Animal Control has also completed its investigation into the incident involving Sugar and has referred the case to the District Attorney for review and consideration of formal charges,” the organization said.
Sugar was examined by a veterinarian after arriving in Pasadena Humane’s care in August and was found to have swelling and several minor wounds, although X-rays showed no broken bones.
Sugar was well known in the neighborhood, where residents said he had roamed for several years and was distinguishable from other peacocks by his all-white plumage.
