PETA is giving Los Angeles vegans a chance to join in on the “Hot Wings Challenge” this weekend, the animal rights group announced Wednesday.
PETA will host its Vegan Hot Wings Challenge over two weekends this month, beginning Saturday.
The events will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Oct. 10 and Oct. 17 at PETA’s James Cromwell Empathy Center, 2624 W. Sunset Blvd., and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 11 and Oct. 18 at Melrose Trading Post, 7850 Melrose Ave.
It’s free to participate, and more information can be found at partiful.com/e/IPmg8oOoUt8XPTYx6ePc.
“Challengers will attempt to conquer five tasty vegan wings slathered in five increasingly scorching sauces — with all the sweat, tears, and bragging rights of a traditional wings challenge, but none of the slaughter,” the group said.
Those who make it through all five rounds can cool down with oat milk, vegan ranch, celery and other heat-beaters, snap victory selfies in front of a themed backdrop, and score custom merchandise.
Hot wings challenges have derived from bar dares and restaurant promotions to a full-fledged social media phenomenon in recent years, including the popular “Hot Ones” YouTube show created by Sean Evans and Chris Schonberger, which features A-list celebrities being interviewed while they attempt to eat increasingly spicy chicken wings.

A hot wings challenge that doesn’t hurt birds? I’m here for it.
Oh, I wish I lived in LA! I’d love to join the fun and see people’s faces as they discover just how delicious vegan wings can be. Chickens are curious, social individuals, and it makes me so happy to see an event offering all the excitement of a hot-wings challenge without the cruelty. <3
I went vegan four years ago. I look better. I feel better. I *know* I’m healthier. Best decision I ever made. (And I’ve tried the vegan wings; they’re good!)
