A cat may have used up one of its nine lives, but it has eight more to go Tuesday thanks to a deputy who saved the feline from a smoke-filled van in Marina del Rey.

The deputy responded at about 11 a.m. Sunday to a report of smoke coming from a van in the 14100 block of Panay Way and upon arrival found an unresponsive cat in the parking lot.

The kitty had been rescued from the van by a Los Angeles Fire Department crew, but the deputy recognized the urgency of the cat’s condition and requested oxygen from firefighters as he began administering first aid to the stricken animal.

After the fire was extinguished, Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel joined in the rescue effort, helping the cat regain consciousness.

The cat was then taken to a veterinary facility and was later reunited with its owner, according to the sheriff’s department, which commended the deputy and thanked firefighters for their assistance.

  1. Brilliant. Bravo. That Deputy has the heart of a hero and lifesaver. Kudos to firefighters for their work in this situation, and to all these brave people for being ready always. This local news outlet would be better if they would use photos from actual event. Please! It’s the right thing, the better thing to do. Lastly, people, keep your cats inside like I do.

  2. Additional comment, the cat was in the van, not necessarily wandering the neighborhood. But I stick by what I wrote, keep them inside. You can make environment interesting for them by putting down cardboard boxes and paper grocery bags, changing them often. You can also teach a cat to walk on a leash outside, but maybe not around the whole neighborhood.
